This lovely antique Victorian Swallow brooch was made representing the Suffragette movement, Circa 1900.
Suffragettes liked to be depicted as feminine, their jewellery popularly consisted of Violet, Green and White colours which were chosen to counter the stereotypes put forward by opponents that they were mannish or shrieking! Green is for Give, white is for Women and violet is for Votes!
The brooch is adorned with a green Peridot, a violet Amethyst and features shamrocks and a Swallow decorated in creamy Pearls.
Swallows are known to mate for life and therefore symbolise love and faithfulness. The image of a swallow was popular during the Victorian era and was often gifted as a romantic token.
